Industrial Hygienist

DutiesAs an Industrial Hygienist, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
Coordinates hazardous chemical management compliance for a natural science research center, including proper inventory, storage, disposal, waste management planning, inspection, corrections, and reporting.
Coordinates safe operations and safety compliance for all people on SERC's campus, provides safety and hazard training and drills, performs safety inspections, and develops safety reports.
Coordinates radiation safety management for a natural science research center, including proper inventory, storage, disposal, inspection, and reporting.
Coordinates SERC safety and emergency preparation with relevant Smithsonian units and offices, serving as SERC's industrial hygiene and safety point of contact.

QualificationsBasic Requirements:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.
S.
Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.
For this position Specialized experience is defined as serving a natural science research center/laboratory to coordinate safe and compliant hazardous chemical waste management according to hazardous waste management plans and national and state chemical safety regulations, and support personnel safety.
Here, natural science research refers to active scientific research in fields related to biology, ecology, chemistry, geology, and Earth science.
OR2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree or LL.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
